We Are Not as Differnt as You Think

https://abagond.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/children-multiracial3.jpg
When you see someone who looks different than you, or even has a different skin color, what do you first think about them? The way you think and talk about people can have an effect on everyone around you. Today we all need to look at each others as equals. When thinking of what it means to be equal, first think of how we treat others and how others treat us. think of the saying you always here older people saying "Treat others others the way you would want to be treated". We need to put all of this together looking at how we are the same but different in our own special ways.

There's More To It Than You Think

Things today were not as they seemed. Back around your grandparents were young people were not seen as 'equals'. During the time they grew up people were segregated into blacks and whites. To segregate means to separate or split up into different groups (2). If you wanted to ask them about this they could tell stories about what life was like for then. They could possibly tell about how in school they had separate classrooms for black and white children. They even had different water fountains they had to drink from. Think about how good you have it today. Compared to back then, we all live better and more peaceful lives.

How You Should and Shouldn't Act

Figure 1: Girls being mean to another girl
Let us out things like this, say there is a new person who just come to your school. How do you think they feel about all the change that has happened to them? That person could be very scared about making new friends or how the other children will act about that person being there. There are certain ways you should and shouldn't act towards them. There are a quite few things that you should not do to someone. Some include not talking about them behind their back, excluding them from activities, or even judge them about anything. By doing this you discriminate against them. To discriminate against someone means to treat them unfairly or differently because of who they are or where they come from(1). By doing this, it really hurts their feelings and it makes them feel like they are not welcome and you can see this in Figure 1 (3).

Figure 2: Everyone getting along
The things we should do though really make us and the new person feel better about everything. What we all could do is invite them to join us in things that we do, be polite and treat them nice, and be there for them when they ask for help with anything. If you ca do this not only will you be a better person but you will also feel better about yourself as well! Once others see you doing this to, it could make them want to join and do better to. If you look at Figure 2 (4), you see everyone getting along and being happy with each other.

So just remember about what i said earlier. Treat others with respect and kindness and you will get that back in return. As the saying goes, "Treat others others the way you would want to be treated". Always try and look at the positives in people and in the end things will always be just fine.
